The world will celebrate New Year’s Eve on Tuesday, and so everybody will be in a mood for celebration. Having said that, some countries declared December 31 as a national holiday, while in India, it is considered as a public holiday, but this varies with different states. So, will banks be open or closed on December 31, Tuesday?
According to Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday list, Aizawl and Gangtok will have bank holiday due to New Year’s Eve/Lossong/Namsoong. However, other cities will see banks functioning on the last day of the year.
Some states which have declared December 31 a public holiday will have banks closed on Tuesday, that is, there will be bank holiday. The states that have declared December 31 as a public holiday are – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
It should be kept in mind that in India December 31 is not a national holiday wherein every sector from the government to corporate and schools have a compulsory holiday along with all scheduled commercial banks. If the day is declared a public holiday it means that it is a state level holiday and in accordance with that banks, companies, and other services remain closed. In India bank holidays in 2024 are different in different states and cities. Here bank holidays vary according to various religions, festivals, special occasions and nationalistic days which are either celebrated or honoured.
