Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin will likely be elevated to the post of deputy chief minister.
Sources have said that the change will occur as soon as next month before MK Stalin departs for the US on August 22.
Udhayanidhi Stalin is currently serving Tamil Nadu’s youth affairs and sports minister. His promotion in ranks comes at a time when a reshuffle within the cabinet is expected.
The MLA from the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency was sworn in as a minister in the cabinet in December 2022.
Meanwhile, sources told India Today that Stalin junior was supposed to take up the post of deputy chief minister earlier this year, but controversies in the southern state pushed back Dravida Munnetra Kazgham’s plan to do the needful.
According to a report by Indian Express, the motive behind Udhayanidhi’s elevation is to “unburden” the Tamil Nadu CM and facilitate smoother governance in the state.
“This move will help groom Udhayanidhi with significant responsibilities,” a senior leader told the news outlet.
Last year, Udhayanidhi was at the centre of a storm after he likened sanatana dharma with “dengue and malaria”.
Another reason why his elevation was postponed was due to the hooch tragedy that killed several people after they consumed spurious liquor.
Tamil Nadu will go to assembly polls in 2026.
