In an appalling breach of safety and basic decency, Air India once again finds itself embroiled in scandal. A journalist, who recently was travelling to San Francisco from Karnataka’s Bengaluru shared a harrowing experience on social media after discovering a metal blade in his in-flight meal.

The Air India incident

The incident occurred on Air India flight AI 175, where journalist Mathures Paul was supposedly enjoying a meal of roasted sweet potato and fig chaat. That enjoyment was abruptly shattered when he felt an unmistakable piece of metal in his mouth. Upon inspection, he was horrified to find it was a metal blade.

Harrowing experience

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Paul shared his harrowing experience, writing: “Air India food can cut like a knife. Hiding in its roasted sweet potato and fig chaat was a metal piece that looked like a blade. I got a feel of it only after chewing the grub for a few seconds.”

Paul went on to add, “Thankfully, no harm was done. Of course, the blame squarely lies with Air India’s catering service but the incident doesn’t help the image I have of Air India.”

Paul even questioned what would have happened if the food was served to a child. “What if the metal piece was in the food served to a child?”

“First picture shows the metal piece that I spat out and the second picture shows the meal before it put metal into my life,” he said, tagging Air India in the post.

Netizen reactions

Netizens had a wide range of reactions to the incident, while some were skeptical about the situation, others shared hilarious responses.

One person wrote, “Now that’s a cutting edge dining experience,” while a second shared, “Scary, imagine if this food was given to a kid. Sometimes when we are watching movies, we hardly focus on food on an airplane.”

Responding to a netizen who posted, “This is absolutely scary, result of hurried affairs and can’t be ignored. Hope @airindia looks into this with utmost care and attention!”, he said, “They don’t care… the apology on flight lasted five seconds.”

Air India replies

Air India replied in the comments section, writing, “Dear Mr. Paul, we are sorry to know about this. This does not represent the level of service we aim to provide to our passengers. Please DM us your booking details along with your seat number. We’ll ensure this matter is promptly reviewed and addressed.”

Meanwhile, responding to the incident, Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India told news agency ANI, “Air India confirms that a foreign object was found in the meal of a guest aboard one of our flights. After investigation, it has been identified as coming from the vegetable processing machine used at the facilities of our catering partner.”
