After violence, curfew has made a comeback in Manipur. Indefinite curfew were imposed in as many as three districts – Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal – on Tuesday after conflict escalated in Manipur once again on September 9.

The administrations of both Imphal East and Imphal West districts have issued curfew orders effective from 11 am on Tuesday citing “the developing law and order situation”.

The district administration in Imphal West has restricted “the movement of any person(s) outside their respective residences” until further orders, exempting essential services, including media, electricity, court and health.

Violence strikes Manipur again

On Monday (September 9), two people, including a woman and an ex-serviceman belonging to the Kuki-Zo community, were killed in separate incidents.

Both, the woman – Neijahoi Lhungdim (50) – and the ex-serviceman – Limkholal Mate – who was an ex-Havildar of Army’s Assam Regiment, were from Kangpokpi district.

A report by The Indian Express quoted sources as saying that the body of the woman, with bomb splinter injuries, was found outside a church in Kangpokpi’s Thangbuh village.

It is suspected that the woman was caught in the crossfire on Sunday night when assailants attacked a CRPF camp near Thangbuh village.

Meanwhile, the body of the retired soldier, Mate, who, as per a report by NDTV, was allegedly kidnapped, when he was on his way to a market in Shantipur to buy groceries, was found in Sekmai village of Imphal West district on Monday.

The Indian Express report quoted sources as saying that Mate, a resident of Kangpokpi’s Motbung, had accidentally crossed into the village on Sunday night.

The two deaths came a day after at least five people were killed in Manipur.

As many as 11 people have been killed in different incidents of ethnic violence in Manipur since September 1.

Students protest in Manipur

Following the killing of Neijahoi Lhungdim and Limkholal Mate, hundreds of grade students clashed with police personnel in Imphal on Monday leading to massive unrest in the state.

Protest rallies were organised by the students in different parts including Thoubal and Imphal, demanding the removal of central forces from Manipur and the protection of the indigenous communities.

The protesting students tried to storm the official residences of Manipur Governor Lakshman Acharya and Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Police had to resort to tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. But, the protesters retaliated with stones, resulting in injuries to cops and other security personnel.

In Thoubal, police used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the protesting students who also retaliated by pelting stones leaving at least 20 people injured.
