Seven people have been arrested and action has been taken against four police officers, including the suspension of three police sub-inspectors, on Tuesday, hours after the security breach at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Tripura’s capital Agartala.

A report by PTI quoted SP of West Tripura Kiran Kumar K as saying that three sub-inspectors were suspended and a deputy superintendent of police was ‘closed’, asking him to report to the police headquarters, for alleged negligence in duty.

“A suo moto case was registered at the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station over the incident. Seven persons have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in the incident,” Kiran Kumar K said.

The sub-inspectors who have been suspended have been identified as Dilu Jamatia, Debabrata Sinha, and Joynal Hossain.

Meanwhile, an order by the Superintendent of Police for West also directed Kanti Nath Ghosh, Assistant Commandant of the Sunni Students Federation (SSF), to immediately report to his office.

Karan Kumar K further said that the Tripura police have already begun an investigation into the incident, and will take steps as per the law.

The senior cop also said that security at the consulate was amped up following the incident, and CRPF and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel have been deployed.

A report by The Indian Express quoted a senior police officer as saying that the attackers have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to assaulting or using criminal force against public servants on duty, unlawful assembly, rioting, and criminal trespass. The case has been registered with the New Capital Complex police station.

“The arrested individuals include Jhutan Das of Border Golchakkar, Ujjwal Das of Dashamighat, Diptanil Bhowmik of Abhoynagar, Surja Das of Amtali area in the outskirts of Agartala city, Jhulan Malakar of Belonia in South Tripura, Pradip Saha of 79 Tilla area in Agartala and Alak Majumder of SDO Chowmuhani in West Tripura,” the IE report quoted the senior police official as saying.

On Monday (December 2), a protest was conducted by activists of the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti outside the mission against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh and atrocities against minorities. The peaceful sit-in demonstration soon turned violent and agitators raised the issue of insult towards the Indian flag at a university in Bangladesh and the alleged atrocities against minorities under Muhammad Yunus’s governance.

Within minutes, more than 50 agitators breached the police barricade and barged into the complex. This happened when a delegation of six protesters went to meet the Assistant High Commissioner. The agitators then removed Bangladesh’s flag hoisted there and damaged chairs and other objects.

The Ministry of External Affairs reacted to the protests and said: “The incident of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala is deeply regrettable. Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances.”

“Government is taking action to step up security arrangements for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and their Deputy/Assistant High Commissions in the country,” the MEA further said.

Bangladesh interim government led by Muhammad Yunus also reacted, saying: “The Government of Bangladesh deeply resents the violent demonstration and attack by a large group of protesters of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity of Agartala on the afternoon of December 2 on the premises of the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala.”

It further called upon the Indian government to take immediate action to address the incident and undertake a thorough investigation.

In rage following the attack on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, the All Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association on Monday announced that Bangladeshi citizens would no longer be allowed to stay in hotels across the state starting December 2.

Hotels across Tripura have been instructed to put up posters at their front desks, prohibiting Bangladeshi nationals and the association also has asked to enhance security checks.

Secretary of the hotel owners’ association, Bhaskar Chakraborty, said that hoteliers are united in their decision to deny services to Bangladeshi nationals.
