The assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Odisha took place simultaneously, in four phases, from May 13 to June 1 and results for both will be declared today.

1. The numbers: The Odisha assembly has 147 seats, and 74 seats are needed for a majority. In 2019, the ruling Biju JD had won 113 assembly seats and 12 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.

2. The fight: Naveen Patnaik has been Odisha CM for over 24 years and another term will make him the longest serving state chief minister. There had been a controversy around Naveen Patnaik’s health during campaigning and some reports suggested that he may appoint bureaucrat-turned political leader VK Pandian as his successor. However, Patnaik has said that Pandian is not his successor.

3. The claims: The BJD has claimed that it would win more than 115 of the 147 assembly seats. The opposition BJP claims it would win over 75 assembly seats and form a government in the state.

4. The projections: While some exit polls have given a clear majority to the BJD others have projected a tight finish. Axis My India predicts an equal number of seats to both BJP and BJD – 62 to 80. On the other hand, Pragatavadi’s exit poll gives a clear majority to the BJD with 94 seats.

5. The status of assembly: Odisha Governor Raghubar Das on Monday dissolved the 16th Odisha state assembly ahead of the counting on June 4 after the state cabinet in its last meeting recommended the dissolution.
