At least 5 people were killed and dozens were injured after a stage collapsed at a Jain Nirvana festival in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at the Jain college ground in Baraut. A makeshift stage made of bamboo and wood collapsed during the ‘Nirvana Laddu Parv’ of the first Tirthankara in Jainism, Bhagwan Adinath.

Police officials said hundreds of devotees had gathered to offer laddoos to Lord Adinath in the presence of Jain monks.

Officials quickly arrived at the scene, and rescue operations were initiated. The SP and Additional SP also reached the location to assess the situation.

District Magistrate Asmita Lal said that a “wooden structure” collapsed during the Jain community program, injuring around 40 people. “20 people were sent home after treatment, 20 people are still undergoing treatment, and 5 people have died,” she added.

Further details are awaited.
