A heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh when eleven passengers were murdered and at least ten injured after a stone-laden dumper truck went turtle on their bus late on Saturday.

The bus was stopped near a wayside dhaba on Gola State Highway in the Khuthar region. All of the deceased were from the Sitapur area and were on their way to the Purnagiri shrine in Uttarakhand.

After learning about the event, SSP Shahjahanpur Ashok Kumar Meena and DM Umesh Pratap Singh hurried to the scene to supervise the rescue efforts.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the Shahjahanpur road accident.

“The news of 11 people getting killed in a road accident in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh is extremely painful. In this hour of grief, my condolences are with the bereaved families and I pray to God to give them strength to bear this loss. I pray to Mother Purnagiri for the speedy recovery of the injured people,” Dhami said in a post on ‘X’.

Multiple cranes are being deployed to rescue the individuals trapped in the bus, and the death toll may rise, authorities said.

The rescue effort took more than three hours to complete. Khuthar was visited by the police force from neighbouring police stations.

The Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) task was to make sure the survivors received the best care possible.

The bus had stopped at the Rishi eatery with about forty-five people on board. While the other passengers chose to remain inside the bus, the other half got down to have supper.

The majority of them were kids and women. A dumper truck approaching from the other way lost its balance and collided with the bus at around 11:10 p.m. There was a disturbance at the dhaba shortly after the accident. From the bus came the sounds of passengers begging for assistance.

Despite their best efforts, the restaurant staff was unable to free the trapped guests from the huge vehicle. Cranes were used to rescue the victims after police were notified promptly.

“We rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation immediately,” SSP Ashok Kumar Meena told TOI. “Fortunately, the cranes were available near the accident spot. So far 11 passengers are reported dead and 10 are injured. The condition of most of the survivors is stable at the hospital.”
