First-time MLA Rekha Gupta has been named the new Chief Minister of Delhi, the BJP announced on Wednesday.

The formal announcement came from the X handle of the Delhi BJP.

“Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Rekha Gupta ji on being elected the leader of the Delhi BJP Legislative Party. We have full faith that the state will progress under your leadership,” Delhi BJP said in a post in Hindi.

Gupta was elected as the Leader of the House during the BJP legislature party meeting in the Delhi Assembly, marking the party’s return to power in Delhi after more than 26 years.

” …I thank BJP, and I am grateful for the blessings of all of you,” she said in her first remarks after being named for the top job.

Gupta and her Cabinet ministers are set to take their oaths of office at Ramlila Ground on Thursday.

In the February 5 Assembly elections, she won the Shalimar Bagh seat, defeating AAP candidate Bandna Kumari by over 29,000 votes.

All 48 newly elected BJP MLAs attended the legislature party meeting, which included Central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and O P Dhankar.

The Chief Minister-designate will now meet Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena at Raj Niwas to formally request the formation of a BJP-led government in Delhi.

Gupta will become the fourth woman to serve as chief minister of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
