In what appears to be a concession statement, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has said that “we accept the decision of the people”.
Despite early trends indicating that Congress may finally win a seat in Delhi after 10 years, it now appears that the party will once again fail to win a seat
as the BJP appears set to win.
As per the latest trends at 11:40 am, the BJP is ahead on 45 of 70 seats and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on 25.
Amid such trends, Congress leader Dikshit told ANI, “As of now it seems that they (BJP) will form the govt… We raised the issues but I think people thought that we are not going to form the govt – we accept the decision of the people.”
Despite being allies in the INDIA bloc, Congress and AAP fought bitterly during the Delhi assembly elections and did not have any seat-sharing arrangement. Dikshit is contesting on New Delhi seat where AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal is leading.
In the election campaign, Dikshit had criticised both Kejriwal and the BJP. He told The Daily Pioneer had said that the BJP had never actually criticised the BJP but just repeated his arguments. He further accused the AAP of plotting to divide Congress voters in other states to help the BJP win.
“There is a critique and a criticism of AAP, which is not party-specific. Criticism is opposition-specific. If Yamuna is dirty, do you expect BJP to say something else about Yamuna and us to say something else? We are in the Opposition, we will attack you for all the things that you have not done. When they were in the Opposition, AAP and BJP both called us corrupt in 2012-13. We could very easily say that you are saying exactly what BJP was saying. The role of the opposition is to criticize the government wherever it finds valid criticism,” said Dikshit.
