The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall, dense fog, and cold wave conditions in several parts of India. Delhi and surrounding areas are expected to experience a mix of weather events, including isolated rainfall and foggy conditions.
Delhi-NCR weather
On Monday, isolated places in Delhi witnessed cold wave conditions and dense fog. The maximum temperature was recorded at 17.3°C, two notches below the seasonal average, while the city’s minimum temperature is likely to settle around 7°C. An orange alert has been issued for dense fog in the region.
Air quality remains a concern, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ category. Anand Vihar station recorded an AQI of 374 on Monday morning, reflecting high pollution levels.
A fresh western disturbance is expected to bring scattered rainfall and snowfall activity to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from Tuesday night over the next three days. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi-NCR, and Uttar Pradesh are also likely to see isolated rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on January 15 and 16.
Temperatures across Northwest and Central India are expected to drop by 2-3°C over the next two days, followed by a gradual rise of 2-4°C later in the week.
Fog prediction
Dense fog is likely to affect visibility in isolated pockets of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan on Monday. Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are expected to experience dense to very dense fog in many areas, while parts of Uttar Pradesh may also see similar conditions.
Jammu and Kashmir weather
The Kashmir valley is expected to remain mostly cloudy with dry weather until January 18, except for light snowfall at higher altitudes on January 15 and 16. Currently, the region is in the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the harshest winter period lasting until January 31, characterized by intense cold and snowfall.
Residents in affected regions are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions during this period of fluctuating weather conditions.
