Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi took a jibe at the NDA government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the centre “insulted former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh by organising his cremation on Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi”.
Notably, the Congress reached out to the central government demanding a designated spot to build a memorial in the name of Dr Singh, who passed away on December 26 after battling with age-related illness.
In an elaborate post on ‘X’, LoP Gandhi wrote, “The great son of Mother India and the first Prime Minister of the Sikh community, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji has been totally insulted by the present government by performing his last rites today at the Nigambodh Ghat.”
“He was the Prime Minister of India for a decade, during his tenure the country became an economic superpower and his policies are still the support of the poor and backward classes of the country”, he noted.
Rahul Gandhi continued, “Till date, respecting the dignity of all former Prime Ministers, their last rites were performed at authorized burial sites so that every person could have the last darshan and pay homage without any inconvenience. Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves our highest respect and a memorial. The government should have shown respect to this great son of the country and his proud community.”
The last rites of Dr Manmohan Singh was performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi, earlier today, with several leaders from across the partyline paying tribute to the former PM.
Dr Singh is known as the architect of modern India’s economy, who played a key role in the introduction of economic reforms in the country in 1991.
