Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined India’s commitment to bringing 250 million people out of poverty in his remarks at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brazil.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Joe Biden, and Modi are among the leaders attending the two-day conference at Rio de Janeiro’s Modern Art Museum.

In his remarks at the G20 meeting on “Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty,” PM Modi emphasised India’s strategy of fusing conventional practices with progressive tactics.

He emphasised that two important components of this endeavour are the nation’s emphasis on organic farming and the encouragement of climate-resilient crops.

Here are 5 things PM Modi said at the G20 summit:

1. PM Modi described his speech in a series of posts on X, highlighting the significant progress India has made in combating hunger and poverty.

“At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, spoke at the Session on the ‘Fight Against Hunger and Poverty.’ This is an important subject and success in this sector will contribute greatly towards sustainable progress. During my remarks, I talked about India’s efforts, notably how we collectively worked to remove 250 million people from the clutches of poverty,” PM Modi wrote on X.

2. “India believes in the approaches of ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘March to Future.’ That is why we are emphasising on organic farming, popularising millets (known as Shree Anna in India) and encouraging climate-resilient crop varieties,” PM Modi added.

Additionally, he also emphasised India’s accomplishment of giving 800 million people free rations. He also discussed efforts to guarantee healthcare for the elderly and underprivileged.

3. According to PTI, Modi praised the Brazilian presidency of the G20 for carrying out the “people-centric decisions” made at the bloc’s summit in New Delhi last year during an address on the opening day of the meeting.

4. The food, fuel, and fertiliser crises brought on by international conflicts have the greatest negative effects on the countries of the Global South, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Monday that the G20 should prioritise their issues and goals. At the Rio talks, he noted, the Indian G20 presidency’s appeal for “One Earth, One Family, One Future” remained relevant.

“I would like to say that countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertiliser crisis caused by global conflicts,” he stated. “So our discussions can only be successful when we keep in mind the challenges and priorities of the Global South,” he stated.

5. The prime minister delivered the remarks at the G20 meeting on ‘Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty’. The formation of a worldwide coalition to tackle poverty and hunger, which has received backing from at least 80 countries, was the highlight of the first day.

In a post, Modi referred to the project as “commendable” and stated that it represents a major step in the direction of guaranteeing food security and improving the lives of disadvantaged communities around the world. “India pledges to fully support this endeavour.”

During the session, the prime minister stated that India is promoting climate-resilient crop varieties, popularising millets, and emphasising organic farming because it believes in the ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘March to Future’ methods.

“It is a matter of great satisfaction that we prioritised SDG (sustainable development goals). We focused on Inclusive development, women-led development, and youth power,” he said, adding, “And gave wings to the hopes and aspirations of the Global South. It is clear that One Earth One Family One Future is as relevant at this summit as it was last year.”

The topic of India’s G20 presidency was based on the ancient Sanskrit scripture Maha Upanishad. “Maintaining our focus on Women-led development and social inclusion, over 300 million women micro-entrepreneurs have been linked to banks and given access to credit,” Modi added.
