Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut was convicted in a defamation case on Thursday and will now spend 15 days in jail.
A magistrate’s court in Mumbai has also ordered Raut to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 over the same case.
Who filed the case against Raut?
Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya’s wife Medha Somaiya slapped the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader with the defamation case.
What’s the case about?
Medha, a professor of organic chemistry, said that Raut had made “false and incorrect” statements against her and her husband in the media on April 15 and 16 2022, accusing the duo of being involved in a Rs 100 crore scam in the construction and maintenance of public toilets in Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
“The statements made by the accused to the media are per se defamatory. The statements have been made to malign my character in the eyes of the general public,” the complaint read.
Apart from mainstream media, the statements were also published in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece, Saamna’s online edition.
“I have suffered serious injury by the imputations made by the accused and had to undergo severe agony in explaining the true and correct facts to my well-wishers, family and friends,” Medha said in the complaint.
Medha also sought both an unconditional apology and a permanent injunction against Raut, prohibiting him from publishing, circulating, or printing any defamatory material about her in the future.
