Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced that Karnataka will construct 100 houses for victims in landslide-hit Wayanad.

Taking to the social media post ‘X’, Siddaramaiah said in light of the tragic landslide in Wayanad, Karnataka stands in solidarity with Kerala.

“I have assured CM Shri @pinarayivijayan of our support and announced that Karnataka will construct 100 houses for the victims. Together, we will rebuild and restore hope,” he said.

Meanwhile, several Kerala CPI(M) MLAs have announced that they would donate their one month’s Rs 50,000 salaries to CMDRF (Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund).

Wayanad death toll update

As many as 308 people have died and over 500 were injured in the massive landslides that hit Wayanad district in the wee hours of July 30.

Around 300 people are suspected to be missing, and rescue operators are battling adverse conditions, including waterlogged soil, as they search through destroyed homes and buildings.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said, “Rescue operations in the Wayanad disaster-affected area are in the final stage. The initial phase focussed on bringing everyone to safe locations. Rescuers risked their own lives, driven by even the faintest hope of saving others.”

The government has handed over 148 bodies of the victims to their respective families while 10,042 people are currently housed at relief camps.

Mental health help for victims

Natural disasters like the Wayanad landslides take a severe toll on people’s mental health. For this, a Mental Health Disaster Management team has been formed in Kerala to provide psychosocial support to survivors of the devastating landslide at Wayanad, where over 200 people lost their lives and almost as many are still missing, state Health Minister Veena George said on Friday.

George said a 121-member team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers and counsellors was formed on Tuesday, soon after the disaster struck the hilly district of Kerala.

She said only the special team members with ID cards issued by the health department will be allowed to provide mental health support to the survivors in relief camps and to those admitted to various hospitals.
