The death of a 26-year-old man due to electrocution in Central Delhi’s Patel Nagar has led the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to issue notices against the Delhi Government and police chief, seeking a response over action taken over the mishap.

On Wednesday, Nilesh Rai, a 26-year-old UPSC aspirant died after he came in contact with a live and exposed motor wire during heavy rains in the national capital.

The rights body has also sought to know about the compensation awarded to the next family of the dead as well as the steps proposed or taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

In a statement, the commission said it has taken “suo motu cognisance of a media report that a young man died due to electrocution while trying to cross over a water-logged street with the support of an iron gate leading to his paying guest accommodation in Patel Nagar area of Delhi on July 22”.

How did the man die?

The accident took place on Wednesday afternoon when Rai slipped and held an iron gate for support. Reportedly, the iron gate stands right next to an electric pole with a cluster of exposed wires going to various homes in the society.

“We received a call about the electrocution at 2.43pm. A person was found stuck at an iron gate near the Patel Nagar Metro station due to an electric current in the gate. There was waterlogging on the road. The victim was taken to RML hospital, where he was declared dead,” the police said.

The day after the incident, the street remained flooded with water, and the entire lane was strewn with exposed wires scattered on the ground or dangling from poles. Surrounding the iron gate where Rai tragically lost his life, numerous wires, including those designated for earthing, could be seen.
