Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate from J&K’s Baramulla seat, has been granted two hours custody parole to take oath as MP on July 5 in the parliament.

Abdul Rashid, who is also called Engineer Rashid, got the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) consent on Monday to take oath as a Lok Sabha member.

Rashid could not take oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha on June 24 as he has been lodged in jail since 2019 after being charged by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his alleged involvement in a terror funding case.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Rashid defeated ex-chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Congress leader Omar Abdullah by a margin of over 2 lakh votes.

Rashid had moved the court seeking interim bail custody parole in the alternative, to take oath as well as perform his parliamentary functions.

While giving its consent, the NIA said Rashid should be subject to certain restrictions including not speaking to the media.

The agency’s counsel also said that Rashid will have to finish taking the oath and all other activities within a single day.

Rashid has been arrested in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. He contested the election from jail.
