While addressing the joint session of the parliament President Droupadi Murmu recalled the horrors of Emergency. In her thought-provoking speech, the president described the imposition of Emergency in 1975 as the ”biggest and darkest chapter” of the country. She went on to call it a direct attack on the country’s constitution from which India emerged as “victorious”.

”Today is 27th June. The imposition of Emergency on June 25, 1975, was the biggest and darkest chapter of the direct attack on the Constitution. The entire country felt outraged. But the country emerged victorious over such unconstitutional forces as the traditions of the republic lie at the core of India,” the president averred.

She insisted that even after the constitution came into force, there were several attacks on it. She went on to claim that when the country’s constitution was drafted, there were “powers in the world” who were hoping that India would fail.
