BJP has formed a four-member committee to look into reports of post-poll violence in West Bengal after the party accused Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee of being a mute spectator.
The committee, formed by BJP President JP Nadda, includes Biplab Kumar Deb, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Brij Lal and Kavita Patidar.
A party statement said, “Mamata Banerjee remains a mute spectator, while criminals of her party, attack and intimidate opposition workers and voters with impunity. Even the Calcutta High Court has taken note of these excesses and extended deployment of CAPF till June 21 and has listed the matter for hearing on June 18.”
The ruling party said the Lok Sabha elections were held across the country and no instance of political violence was reported from anywhere except West Bengal.
BJP in Bengal has alleged that TMC party workers incited violence in the state during and after the elections. West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said that he and the victims of poll violence were blocked from entering the Raj Bhavan to address their grievances to the government.
WB Governor slams TMC
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress for not letting the victims of poll violence enter the Raj Bhavan despite his office granting them permission to do so.
“Yesterday I gave permission to the victims of violence in the field who came from various parts of Bengal to meet me in the Raj Bhavan and air their grievances. I was shocked to find that for one reason or the other, they were all prevented from exercising their democratic rights or defending their lives,” Bose said.
Bose also met several of the victims of political violence in various shelters including the one located in Burrabazar. After meeting the victims the governor said, ““I have heard the victims. That is one version of the story. As a governor, I would like to be fair before making any comments. I have sought a report. After listening to what the government has to say, I will give you my opinion.”
Post-poll violence in Bengal
West Bengal witnessed a spate of violence just a day after Lok Sabha results were declared on June 4.
Violence was reported in several districts including Cooch Behar, North and South 24 Parganas and Jhargram.
Workers from both BJP and TMC were engaged in fighting.
Some BJP supporters reportedly took shelter in party offices across the state to flee the violence of TMC workers.
