Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday took to X to extend his greetings to his Indian counterpart Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assuming office for the third time.

The gesture was largely reciprocal as Prime Minister had also extended his greetings to Prime Minister Sharif in March after he took charge as the premiere of Pakistan.

Despite this social media exchanges, India and Pakistan are not in the best of ties.

Addressing her weekly press briefing last week, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Pakistan has been acting in a “responsible manner, notwithstanding the difficulties and rhetoric coming from India”. “Pakistan has always desired cooperative relations with all its neighbours including India. We have consistently advocated constructive dialogue and engagement to resolve all outstanding issues, including the core dispute of Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.

Pakistan downgraded its diplomatic relations with India following the Indian Parliament’s revocation of Article 370 on 5 August, 2019. Islamabad viewed this move as detrimental to fostering dialogue between the two nations. India, on the other hand, has consistently expressed its wish for amicable relations with Pakistan, while emphasizing that it is Pakistan’s responsibility to establish an environment devoid of terrorism and hostility to facilitate such engagement.
