Odisha was one of the states that went to the assembly polls along with the Lok Sabha election that happened over several phases during April-May. In the early trends emerging from the Election Commission’s counting centres across Odisha, the BJP has strongly emerged as the leading party in both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Of the trends for 74 of the 147 assembly seats, the BJP was leading in 43 constituencies at 10.20 am. The ruling BJD of CM Naveen Patnaik was leading at 24 seats while the Congress was ahead in six constituencies.
In the Lok Sabha election, the BJP is looking at an almost clean sweep in Odisha that sends 21 members to the Lok Sabha. The BJP was leading at 17 seats, while the BJD was in the lead at only two seats. The Congress was ahead in two constituencies.
Naveen Patnaik has been the chief minister of Odisha since 2000 and remained an insurmountable force till date. But with the rise in PM Modi’s popularity, the BJP won eight seats in 2019 and looked set to improve its performance this year during the election campaign.
