In a bizarre incident from Bihar’s Jamui district, 13 schoolteachers faced salary deductions from the education department, not for their classroom performance, but for what was mistakenly termed as “bed performance.”

This typographical error not only caused trolling on social media but also condemnation from teaching associations.

According to reports based on Education department’s version of the incident, surprise inspections by education department officials on May 22 revealed several teachers’ absence from duty in various schools across Jamui district. Additionally, the performance of many teachers was deemed unsatisfactory.

Responding to these findings, the local district education officer (DEO) issued an official letter outlining the actions taken against the erring teachers. However, the wording of the letter inadvertently drew more attention to the education department’s error than to the teachers’ misconduct.

The letter indicated that the salary of 13 teachers was reduced due to “bed performance.” Following its circulation on social media, the DEO’s office promptly issued a clarification, attributing the mistake to a typing error. The corrected statement clarified that the intended term was “bad performance.”
