The permanent registration of the Porsche Taycan, involved in Pune accident that killed two, had been pending since March as the owner of the car, real estate developer Vishal Agarwal, did not pay Rs 1,758 fee.

The Porsche Taycan, driven by 17-year-old son of the builder on Sunday, was imported in March by a dealer in Bengaluru. It was then sent to Maharashtra on a temporary registration, a report by PTI quoted Maharashtra Transport Commissioner, Vivek Bhimanwar, as saying.

The electric luxury sports sedan, Porsche Taycan, has a base price of Rs 1.60 crore ex-showroom, and can go up to Rs 2.44 crore, before registration and taxes.

Vishal Agarwal
paid Rs 45,000 to RTO to get the chosen registration number for the Porsche Taycan that he purchased, but the process was left incomplete.

Aneesh and Awadhiya, both friends, were from Madhya Pradesh and were working in an IT company in Pune. They were hit by the speeding Porsche Taycan when they were returning from a dinner party.

Porsche Taycan registration process was incomplete

Bhimanwar further said when the Porsche Taycan purchased by Vishal Agarwal was produced at the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) it was found that a certain registration fee was not paid. He (the owner) was asked to pay the amount for completion of the procedure.

“However, the vehicle was not brought to the RTO for the completion of the registration process after that,” Bhimanwar said.

As per the top officials of the Maharashtra transport department, road tax is exempted for EVs registered in the state. Hence, for the registration of Porsche Taycan model the registration fees that was applicable was Rs 1,758 with the break-up of Rs 1,500 hypothecation fees, Rs 200 smart card RC fees and Rs 58 postal charges.

Porsche owner didn’t register car at RTP before plying on roads

The officials further informed that as per their records, the Porsche Taycan, involved in Pune accident had a valid temporary registration certificate issued by Karnataka with a validity of six months from March to September 2024.

They said that the Porsche dealer in Bengaluru, who imported the vehicle, was not at fault as he had handed over the luxurious car after doing the temporary registration. Hence, it was the responsibility of the owner to get it registered at the RTO before plying it on the roads. During the temporary registration period, the vehicles can only be used to drive to and from the RTO.

“The vehicle will be impounded for 12 months,” another top official of the transport department was quoted as saying by PTI.
