The Congress North East Delhi candidate Kanhaiya Kumar was “attacked” while campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2024 on Friday. The incident happened outside the AAP office in the New Usmanpur area as Kahnhaiya was coming out after a party meeting with local Councillor Chhaya Sharma.
According to a complaint by Sharma,” Some persons came and put garland around Kanhaiya Kumar. After garlanding him, some persons threw ink on Kanhaiya Kumar “assaulted” him. When Smt. Chhaya Sharma tried to intervene, they misbehaved and threatened her.”
As per the viral video that showed the attack on Kanhaiya Kumar, a person can be heard saying, “Kanhaiya pitne wala hai” (Kanhaiya is going to be beaten). Soon after this, a youth in a black t-shirt with a garland in his hands went closer to Kanhaiya on the pretext of garlanding him and slapped the Congress leader.
In a statement, Kanhaiya Kumar’s team has alleged that the attack on him was ordered by sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MP Manoj Tiwari as the saffron party is scared of the growing popularity of the Congress leader and that is why he sent “goons” to attack him, according to media reports.
Congress leader Abhishek Dutt took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he accused the BJP of assaulting Kanhaiya Kumar. The post read, “This one slap is going to make the Bharatiya Janata Party lose the elections in Delhi. @kanhaiyakumar will win the elections, now it remains to be seen how many more these cowardly BJP people beat an innocent Bihari.
The Congress is contesting three seats in Delhi as part of the seat-sharing arrangement between Congress and AAP, while the latter fielded candidates from four constituencies in Delhi.
